Learn about migraine prevention and how you can identify patients who may benefit from preventive therapy.
AAN, AAFP, and ACP guidelines for prevention*2,3
Patients may benefit from migraine prevention if:
- They get 2 or more attacks a month that significantly
interfere with daily routines (causing disability totaling 3 or more days)
- They use acute (Rx/OTC) medications more than 2 times
a week
- Acute medications are ineffective, are not tolerated,
or are contraindicated
The American Migraine Communication Study (AMCS) recommends
questions to help identify the total degree of impairment:4
- How do migraines make you feel — even when you aren't
having one?
- Can you describe the impact migraines have on your
work, family, or social life?
